Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
